Austrian "3pdr" - and best wishes for the New Year.

Nothing much has been happening on the 40mm SYW front over the last few months. I am told the plan is to release the dragoons early next year - fingers crossed.

I have however, as suggested in my post back in March (was it really that long ago) had a play at making an Austrian 3pdr battalion gun using the following components:

  • Wheels from new SYW range
  • Barrel from the Karoliner 6pdr
  • Carriage from the Rossbach 12pdr

I then made the following minor modifications:

  • Added a cross piece in the trail - not quite correct but looks better.
  • Drilled out the holes at the rear of the carriage, which made it look much neater,
  • I originally assembled the wheels on the carriage as cast - but they looked too wide. To correct this I narrowed the solid/rectangular axle by about 2mm and then attached the wheels by drilling out 1.5mm holes, and inserting new axles made from the pegs of spare heads.
  • Drilled out the end of the barrel.

As discussed in the earlier post, the dimensions are not quite right - however I am happy with the result and will be rearming my Austrians with them (when I start working on them again).

Best wishes to you all for the New Year.

Steve

  3. Thanks.

I think it looks pretty good - the (correct) 12 spoke wheels look much better than the old (incorrect) 8 spoke ones.

  4. Hi,
First I will thank you for a very informative website.

I have been thinking about using the barrel from 6 pdr in the scale 25 mm as 3 pdr in 40 mm scale. It should be almost right size (6 pdr 25mm = 3,75 pdr 40mm) but I dont know.

    Best regards

Sorry for delay, I have only just seen your comment.

See post 1st March 2018. I measured the Austrian SYW barrels in Vienna and the overall length, including the counterweight was:
    6 pdr 1640mm
    3 pdr 1270mm

So the 3pdr is 77% the length of the 6pdr
25/40=62%, so I suspect a 25mm would be too small
A 28mm scale barrel is closer at 70%.

An Austrian 12 pdr was 2030mm long, so a 25mm scale one might do the job 2030*25/40=1269mm compared with 1270mm - almost exact length.

Also I measured the diameter of the 12pdr at `120mm and the 3pdr at 75mm. 25/40x120=75, so again correct.

  7. Thank you Steve,

The barrel I measured was a Swedish 3pdr from GNW and it was shorter just 1055mm and it should make it like 24,42mm in 40mm scale (if I counted correctly). Good to know that the Swedish barrel is to short. Tanks
