10mm War of Spanish Succession

Back in February 2024, I posted about our plans to 3D print and paint some Marlburian armies in 10mm. After 2 years we finally have enough to put the figures on the table - no point in rushing things (after all the 40mm SYW range has so far been over 10 years in the making).

Rules and Basing

For rules we are currently trying 'Twilight of the Sun King' and 'Might and Reason', both of which are 'large battle' sets, with two base units representing a 'brigade' of about 4 battalions of infantry or 10 squadrons of cavalry. (Currently Might and Reason seems to be the preferred option).

The above rules recommend base widths of either 50mm or 60mm, with all movement and shooting as a multiple of that width. As we have relatively large tables available, so for aesthetic reasons we opted to standardise on larger 80mm wide bases with a depth of 30mm for infantry and cavalry, increasing to 60mm for the artillery, as this allowed more figures per base.

Incomp Miniatures

We have almost exclusively used figures 3D printed from files supplied by Incomp, which can be downloaded from here:

https://cults3d.com/en/design-collections/Incomp/wars-of-succession

I chose these figures for a number of reasons, including:

  • The infantry files are in strips of 5, which makes them easy to print and paint. However unlike many small scale strips, the individual figures are relatively easy to separate. This means it is not a major problem to mount them 12 wide on the bases by just breaking the strips.
  • The figures have a chunky look, which I feel works well at smaller scales (but I don't like chunky 28mm figures!), fortunately they do not suffer from the very exaggerated heads of the 6mm Turner figures, which look fine at 6mm, but do not scale up well.
  • The figures have a 'toy soldier' poses, which I like.
  • The figures are quite robust, for example the infantry do not have bayonets, which at smaller scales are either very fragile, or have to be very thick. The cavalry have swords 'at rest' which again are strong.
Currently the range only really covers the War of Spanish Succession (WSS), as the coats do not have turn backs. I understand that the sculptor is planning to modify the files to cover the Great Northern War (GNW), by adding coats with turn backs for the Karoliners, and also figures in the karpus hats.

Incomp is not a well known figure range, however if you have a 3D resin printer and looking for a new project these are really worth a try.

Infantry

(Before you start zooming in too close - remember these are only 10mm tall, not the 40mm chaps we are used to playing with!)

We opted for the 80x30mm bases as this was just wide enough to 12 figures across, and the depth is enough for two ranks. We also went for rounded corners which I think adds some class.

Both of the sets of rules we are trying out assume a 2-base unit represents a brigade of around 4 battalions; however we decided that for aesthetic reasons we would mostly paint up regiments of  two battalions. During the WSS the flags were probably dispersed through the companies, but we went with the later practice of the first battalion carrying one each of the colonel's and regimental colours and the second two regimental ones - they are my toys and I think that looks best😊

Massed Infantry

Cavalry

For gaming purposes we stayed with the same 80x30mm base for the cavalry; this only made space for 8 figures in a single rank. Two ranks would probably have looked better but in this case we went for playability (and less figures to paint).

French Cavalry

Massed Cavalry

Artillery

We doubled the depth of the artillery bases, and mounted to guns per base to represent heavy batteries. The gun models are upscaled and printed from printed from Turner's 6mm 7YW French, as these are much nicer than the Incomp models.

Staff Officers

There are also some nice staff officers.
